Aisha Yesufu, co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, has endorsed the practice of same-sex relationships in Nigeria, saying every indivdiual has the right to have a choice on their sexuality.
Yesufu made her position known in a post on Twitter on Monday.
Homosexuality is currently proscribed in Nigeria and carries a 14-year sentence for offenders. Also, both Christianity and Islam, the two major religions in the country, frown against the practice, considering it a sin.
But Yesufu, who is known to be a staunch Muslim, said no individual needs the approval of anyone liking his or her sexuality.
She claimed that the practice is not a new thing as it has been practicsed in Nigeria over the years, adding that she witnessed same-sex marriages in the 1980s.
The tweet has, however, elicited tons of backlash against the prominent social activist, with some Twitter users castigating her for supporting such practice and asking if she declared her stance because she plans to run for political office.
Other users questioned the veracity of the #EndSARS camapigner claim that same-sex marriages occured in Nigeria in the 1980s.
